What is LRUT?
Long Range Ultrasonic Testing (LRUT), also known as Guided Wave Ultrasonic Testing (GWUT), is an advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) method used to screen long sections of pipeline from a single test location. Unlike conventional ultrasonic thickness measurement that evaluates only localized spots, LRUT propagates guided ultrasonic waves along the pipe wall, enabling screening of extended distances in both directions. LRUT is therefore a powerful pipeline integrity screening tool used in risk-based inspection and asset integrity programs.
How LRUT Works ?
LRUT uses circumferential transducer collars installed around the pipe to generate low-frequency guided waves. These waves travel longitudinally along the pipe wall and reflect back when encountering:
